  • We Say...

Whether it's because of their enviable living standard, centuries-old folk music history or simply ABBA's tuneful legacy, Sweden seems to do everything poppier and more melodic than other nations, and their alternative rock is no exception. On 2002's Before & After (released in 2004 in the US), the Wannadies suggest a Scandinavian mix between the Pixies and the Archies. Guitars strum and grind, keyboards hum happily, and although there are hints of the band's noisier past, nearly every well-produced element is in service of the tunes. Originally conceived as one disc of party tunes and one disc of morning-after material, the quintet's seventh album maintains a warm and sunny vibe — even on the album's most reflective, cuddly ballad, "Come With Me (Till Things Get Better)," someone whistles. Forget that Sweden has the world's highest suicide rate, a fact jokingly reflected in this band's name. When the Wannadies play, you'll wanna live.
