Breezy and assured cinematic jazz from this talented bassist and composer.

  • We Say...

This second outing for the band that bassist/composer Ben Allison now refers to as Man Size Safe is far more assured and innovative than the transitional Cowboy Justice from 2006. On that album, Allison had pulled up his anchor — pianist Frank Kimbrough — and given his concepts more ballast with the nylon-like tone of guitarist Steve Càrdenas and the delicate, non-brassy sinew of trumpeter Ron Horton. Both are much better utilized on Little Things, a disc in which Allison’s symphonic and cinematic soundtrack-oriented prowess as a composer also returns to vintage form. Listen to the inlaid textures, the distinct, suite-like movements, and the thematic symmetry of “Four Folk Songs.” Check how Càrdenas’s guitar hovers above Allison’s bass and the busy brushwork of drummer Michael Sarin on “Blowback,” or the way “Roll Credits” takes dreamy guitar chords, tip-toed bass and rustling cymbals to approximate a pre-dawn stirring that, abetted by Horton’s trumpet, morphs into a preparation for morning rush hour. Allison’s knack for memorable melodic vamps and tongue-in-groove ensemble passages is abundant throughout, but the title track is a highlight in that regard. The wry humor contained in a cover of John Lennon’s “Jealous Guy” and the gently insistent jazz-rocker “Man Size Safe,” finish the collection with a flourish.
