For those whose introduction to Cuban salsa began with the Buena Vista Social Club, Beny More will be a revelation. The greatest of all the salsa vocalists, More's influence, more than forty years after his death, still resonates vibrantly through Latin music. No one was more versatile, and no one spoke more directly to the people of the Caribbean and Latin America. A decade ago, I spend time in Miami among the "exilios" of the Castro Revolution. Sitting in a café on Calle Ocho drinking con leche, we listened to "Oh Vida" playing over the jukebox. It was as if time stood still; More’s voice traversed all time and distance. Everything came to a dead stop until the tune ended. If you think of music as a potentially transformative experience, be prepared to hear a voice that may change your life.
