They Say...
As with the other entries in this Denon series (which also include CDs devoted to big bands, pianos, singers and trumpets), the origin of the material on this set is difficult to trace. Stan Getz performs two numbers while in France during 1958-59, Gerry Mulligan and his quartet play "Jeru" in 1958 and the baritonist jams with tenorman Bud Freeman and trumpeter Ruby Braff on "Rose Room" from the same year. In addition, Zoot Sims leads a quartet in 1974 for two numbers, altoist Hank Crawford and Eddie Daniels (on tenor) team up in 1980, Eddie Lockjaw Davis jams in 1961, Sonny Stitt plays "My Little Suede Shoes" in 1972 and the tenors of Coleman Hawkins, Stan Getz and Don Byas team up for a rousing 1958 version of "Indiana." In general this is one of the most rewarding releases in the Denon series but the lack of any additional information (or liner notes) makes this a recommended set only if located at a budget price.
