Mississippi bluesman inspires the Wanderer

  • We Say...

Jimmy Reed is one in a million. I think out of everybody, he influenced me more than anyone else. Take that shuffly, three-chord thing — if it wasn't for Jimmy Reed I don't think "Ruby Baby" and "The Wanderer" would ever have gotten made. He was the first rock & roller for me. He had a full lineup — bass, drums and harp. It was a city thing. And his way of writing melodies was all his own. Within the blues there's only three chords but it's funny how each guy can come up with a style within those three chords and choose different notes. Those little nuances give music its feel, and Jimmy Reed had a feel that I identified with. He had the roll. Some people have the rock. He just rolled. When I was in Pittsburgh with him in 1959, he couldn't find his way out of the hotel — he'd just never been in a hotel that big! So maybe his music was so simple because he grew up so simple.

  • They Say...

Big Boss Man is a budget-priced 12-track set that includes Jimmy Reed's patented swamp blues guitar and harmonica lines mixed with his uniquely lazy vocal style on his most beloved hits, including "Big Boss Man," "Bright Lights, Big City," "Take Out Some Insurance," and "Honest I Do." Any of the Jimmy Reed Vee Jay reissues are recommended.
