Only know "Me and Mrs. Jones"? Then you need this

  • We Say...

It's easy to reduce Billy Paul's career to his massive 1972 hit "Me and Mrs. Jones" — the song is an object lesson in dramatic songwriting, and its spacious, slow-burning arrangement was perfect for his dignified, raspy voice. But Going East, released the previous year, might have been Paul's most complete artistic statement; it's certainly freer and more expansive than anything that would follow.

His cover of "Compared to What" is sophisticated and unexpected, the original's insistent snap re-imagined as a neck-snapping swing, while the gorgeous "Love Buddies" ranks among Paul's best slow jams. A looser, more spiritual air runs through Going East, as his lively version of "Magic Carpet Ride" dissolves into a flute-and-yawp workout. But the masterpiece — of this album as well as Paul's whole career — is "East." It's a very unusual song for its time, a six-and-a-half minute, trance-like jam at a time when the 7-inch single reigned supreme. It's a haunting, windswept epic of gliding strings, shifty percussion and escapist lyrics, a glorious anomaly that would be rediscovered by later generations as a before-the-fact house anthem.

  • They Say...

Billy Paul's Philadelphia International label debut boasts few of the hallmarks of its breakthrough follow-up 360 Degrees of Billy Paul, let alone Philly soul as a whole -- if anything, the album hews far closer to jazz, with a potent spiritual dimension that defies expectations even further. Apart from the Gamble/Huff composition "Love Buddies," the material draws from sources outside of the Philly International sphere, spanning from Rodgers & Hart's "There's a Small Hotel" to Gene McDaniels' "Compared to What." The arrangements are complex but deeply funky, perfectly suited to Paul's sagelike vocals. A fascinating, genre-defying record, finally reissued on CD in 2007 as part of a two-fer with the subsequent War of the Gods.
