  • We Say...

A rousing mixture of funk, soul and fusion with exuberant vocals and songs that demonstrate all topical music needn't be overtly political to accurately reflect community spirit and sentiment. Such cuts as "Soul Food," "I Wanna Go Back to Hollywood" and the masterful live rendition of "Don't Touch My Friend" express the blend of anxiety, fatalism and realism that still resonates in African-American neighborhoods, punctuated by simple but catchy arrangements, surging charts and fiery leads. Though not blessed with a standout lead vocalist, Black Heritage compensated with sweeping, superbly played and disciplined backing and joyous unison lines, chants and slogans. Their style was more sprawling jams and infectious grooves instead of basic hooks and a quick-hitting lyrical slant, something that prevented them from getting the airplay or even the exposure they deserved.
