A pivotal, breakout moment for Black Uhuru.

  • We Say...

Released in 1981, Black Sounds of Freedom was a pivotal, breakout moment for Derek “Duckie” Simpson, Errol Nelson and Michael Rose’s Black Uhuru. Then again, it was nothing new. Essentially a well-timed remix project undertaken by producer Lloyd “Prince Jammy” James, its beginnings are to be found in the Love Crisis album, cut some four years previously. Greensleeves’ beautifully remastered reissue clears up all confusion by placing both on one CD, along with three superb deejay voicings by U-Black. The harmonies are lustrous, the songs sparkle and Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare’s drum and bass licks remain ruggedly propulsive, the anthemic “I Love King Sellassie” glistening with crystal harmonies and exquisite poise.
