Mid-90s alt-country stalwarts return sounding rejuvenated with a new set of back-porch country-rock.

  • We Say...

If alternative country is dead, as has been touted for many moons now, you’d never know it from the recent bounty of offerings from several of the genre’s torchbearers. On the heels of a strong new Old 97’s album and the news that Jayhawks leaders Mark Olson and Gary Louris have a duo album pending comes the latest from Blue Mountain, whose mid-'90s albums were an archetypal example of what happened when young rockers began digging deep into American roots. Midnight In Mississippi mines similar turf as their previous outings, but the band — which split for a few years while leaders Cary Hudson and Laurie Stirratt pursued other projects — sounds notably rejuvenated. While the trio (drummer Frank Coutch rounds out the lineup) can at times turn up the heat, as on the incendiary title track, mostly they’re working at a slow burn here. The opener, “Groove Me,” sets an easygoing tone, Hudson and Stirratt’s harmonies flowing around the folksy jangle and strum of their guitars. “Emily Smiles” swings along on sweetness and light; perhaps best of all is “Butterfly,” which floats by as breezily and easily as its title would suggest.
