The soundtrack to an ecological utopia

  • We Say...

Ernest Callenbach penned the 1975 cult classic novel Ecotopia, in which northern California, Oregon and Washington secede and close off their borders. Holistic practices and rituals abound in this new nation, a re-connection with the feminine ensues and a new paradigm grows in the luxury of isolation. Left Coast Liquid Vol. 1 is the sonic equivalent of that imaginary culture. Through the deep and scared dub science of Vancouver’s Adam Shaikh, the floating techno ambience of Bluetech, the stoned-out and expansive grooves of Shakatura and the fractal soundscapes of the Desert Dwellers, the common theme of this stunning compilation is a sympathetic vibration, a resonance rooted in a deep ecology of sound that reverberates through the spine of the West Coast — a vibrant culture that embraces yoga and meditation as readily as glitches and grooves. The rest of the country should listen in on this little slice of utopia.
