They Say...
Released on the heels of the Martin Scorsese-directed Dylan documentary No Direction Home (and its accompanying soundtrack), The Best of Bob Dylan is perhaps the best single-disc distillation of his career to date. Given the limitations of a single disc, there are certainly plenty of great songs missing, including some big hits, yet the 16 songs here contain many of his most iconic songs from the '60s and '70s -- "Blowin' in the Wind," "The Times They Are a-Changin'," "Mr. Tambourine Man," "Like a Rolling Stone," "All Along the Watchtower," "Lay Lady Lay," "Knockin' on Heaven's Door," "Tangled Up in Blue," and "Gotta Serve Somebody" among them -- plus a handful of his best songs from the '80s and '90s, including "Jokerman," "Not Dark Yet," the Oscar-winning "Things Have Changed," and the rollicking "Summer Days." Although 2000's Essential Bob Dylan provides a more comprehensive overview -- and although it could be argued that 1971's Greatest Hits, Vol. 2 provides a broader survey of his talents, or that proper albums like The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited, and Blonde on Blonde are better introductions to his work -- anybody looking for a concise summary of Dylan's biggest songs should turn here.
