Sleek and shimmering debut from a promising new saxophonist

  • We Say...

    This auspicious debut from alto saxophonist Jones generally shies away from the bleat and squabble of much “outside” jazz. Instead, Jones favors extended notes that hold their tone and then beseech and shimmer in a gentle arc, like later-period Coltrane.

    He’s often matched in kind by fascinating diddley bow work from Cooper-Moore, who yawls forth his own elongated slide notes for utterly distinctive harmonies (on their improvised duet, “We Are Unicorns,” it’s more conversed sonic soundings), or perks along with cavernous bass notes, like a subterranean didgeridoo. Cooper-Moore moves to piano on the two ballads, the steadily intensifying “Meekness,” and the softer “Forgive Me.” Another veteran sideman, Rakalam Bob Moses, provides mostly restrained rustling on his trap set. “Chasing the Ghost” is a relentless exception, as Moses delivers the polyrhythmic push alongside Cooper-Moore’s diddley bow bass line, which lumbers like a hound hot on the scent with its nose an inch above the ground, as Jones provides a blow-by-blow play-by-play of the chase. “Salty” is another tune you don’t hear every eon, as Jones and Cooper-Moore make like humpback whales and hungry gulls while Moses churns up white-capped beats with his brushes. And don’t miss the closing ten-minute jam, “Chaych!” with bassist Adam Lane and drummer Jason Nazary joining Jones in a bit of gospel gone wild.
