  • We Say...

A fixture on the Southern R&B scene since the early '60s, Bobby Patterson scored a number of regional hits without ever managing to achieve much in the way of national success. But How Do You Spell Love?, a collection of Patterson's early-'70s sides, suggests that the singer deserves far better than his current obscurity. From "Right On Jody" — a funky rejoinder to Johnny Taylor's "Jody's Got Your Girl and Gone" — to "It Takes Two to Do Wrong", "If You Took a Survey" and "An Ounce of Prevention," Patterson obviously has a flair for dissecting domestic complications, but the dark "The Whole Funky World Is a Ghetto" and the guardedly optimistic "Recipe for Peace" show that he's no slouch at social commentary, either. Best of all is "She Don't Have to See You (To See Through You)," a show-stopping ballad cut from the same cautionary cloth as the Persuaders' classic "Thin Line Between Love & Hate."

  • They Say...

Bobby Patterson's How Do You Spell Love? (The Paula Recordings 1971-1973) is a gritty 19-track collection of the Texas soul singer's '70s output recorded between 1971-1973 for Paula. He never had any hits, but Patterson's low-down delivery and the backing band's tough-as-nails sound deliver an enjoyable punch. He wrote most of the tunes here, focusing mainly on extracurricular affairs and their fallout. "Right On Jody" is an answer song to Johnnie Taylor's "Jody Got Your Girl and Gone," "One Ounce of Prevention" is a funky warning, "This Whole Funky World Is a Ghetto" is a harsh and strong protest song. Patterson's style is a kind of cross between the folksy style of Joe Tex and the smooth Southern sound of Luther Ingram. That is a mighty fine cross to bear. Sundazed and Ace have focused on the man's earlier recordings. If you dug those, you will find this set to be essential. Otherwise if you are a fan of early-'70s non-Philly soul, this is top-notch stuff.
