  • They Say...

The Klüvers Big Band is an all-star Danish unit, which on the occasion of this 2007 concert featured tenor saxophonist Jesper Thilo with arrangements by drummer Dennis Mackrel (the latter being George Shearing's first choice on percussion during the latter part of his career), conducted by leader Jens Klüver. Mackrel's charts prove very engaging, inspiring both the soloists and the ensemble. Thilo solos on every selection, highlighted by the understated "Sweet Lorraine," the rousing "Hot House," and a spirited "Lester Leaps In" that is introduced with a subtle solo by the arranger. Trumpeter Lars Vissing, guitarist Søren Bo Addemos, trombonist Nikolai Bøgelund Pedersen, and pianist Mads Baerentzen also shine as soloists. Recommended.
