John Cage (1912-1992) was undoubtedly one of the most idiosyncratic and original composers of the 20th century. Whether you adore or despise his work (from his "chance" compositions to his pieces for toy piano) his ideas have irrevocably influenced generations of composers. Here is a selection of music from the ‘40s, written for piano retrofitted with elements such as wooden screws, nuts, rubber wedges and weather stripping that dramatically alter the piano's pitch, color and dynamic range — in effect, drawing out all the percussive qualities of the instrument.
