A deeply weird, meditative and immersive soak in a musical isolation tank

  • We Say...

The music made by Adam Forkner, aka White Rainbow, is immersive and meditative. It's strange that the Portland, Oregon, resident did not become hugely famous throughout the world upon the 2005 release of this epic set of jams. Perhaps it's hard to tell where the dude is coming from? At first it seems like Forkner might be taking the piss, as the Brits say, playing around with new age conventions in a noisy, chaotic and overly "meta" way. And he is doing that, to some extent; there may even be some irony involved in the creation of some of these sounds. But it's not hipster B.S.: this is every bit as valid heavy, trippy music as Popol Vuh, Steve Tibbets or Tangerine Dream. There's a lot of guitar, but it's not always noticeable as such; after his early success as a droney acid-psych guitar god (a few years ahead of his time) in Surface of Eceyon and Yume Bitsu, Forkner soon retreated to less obvious musical realms — both on his own and in the bands World, Dark Yoga and Jackie-O Motherfucker. That's not to say that there aren't fuzzed-out guitars ("fffffff") or electronic pulses ("Sync2005"). Forkner layers loops and samples on top of each other, sending some of them through heavy processing and letting others float along in the ether. You can hear the process in the works, but that doesn't make it any less magical. If you've seen the film Altered States, you can consider this your own personal isolation tank.
