  • They Say...

The justly famous This Is Jungle Sky series continues with a concept album, of sorts: disc one ("Rock") consists of aggressive, hard-edged drum'n'bass prominently featuring guitar samples and other rock & roll referents. Disc two is a bit trippier and more blissed-out, more like what you'd expect from American drum'n'bass. (And the series title notwithstanding, this is really more drum'n'bass than jungle, strictly speaking -- the reggae influence that plays such an important part in jungle is almost completely missing here.) Disc one is the keeper: DJ Soul Slinger's "God Is a Lobster" is a hilarious, and yet seriously booty-shaking, track based on samples from the B-52's hit "Rock Lobster." DJ Wally and MC Posi-D managed to dig up a sample of Jack Nicholson saying "I am rolling...," which combines with a shuddery descending bassline to prtoduce an irresistible hook. And Tube's "Let's Get Mental" features a very fun robotic synth line and great textures. Disc two is good as well, but after the constant manic energy level of disc one, its more consistent mood comes across as something of a letdown. Highly recommended overall.
