They Say...
Ernest Tubb With T. Texas Tyler is a major find -- the complete November 23, 1946, Checkerboard Jamboree radio show featuring Ernest Tubb & the Texas Troubadours playing live before an audience, in astonishingly good, clean sound. The music isn't continuous (there are some sponsor plugs and comedy, including some racially offensive stereotype humor by an Amos & Andy-type act called Jam Up & Honey); Tubb isn't the only artist included (Vic Willis tries to anticipate Jimi Hendrix's act -- on the accordion; Dot & Smokey do "You Go to Your Church and I'll Go to Mine," the Oklahoma Wranglers do "Daisy Mae," and Wally Fowler sings "John Hendricks' Vision"); and ideally, Radiola would have indexed the songs, which include Tubb's "You Brought Sorrow to My Heart," "Forgive Me," "I'm Walkin' the Floor Over You," "Divorce Me C.O.D.," and "I Told Them All About You" (the latter sung by Troubadours Jimmy and Leon Short). Still, this is what country music on the radio was like, which is how listeners have almost any live material from this era to enjoy in the first place, and it shows off the people it was made by even better than official records do, as well as their tastes and interests, and in that regard this disc is a must-own for any serious country music fan. Also included is a complete T. Texas Tyler & His Western Dance Band radio show -- his first, from January 11, 1950 -- and, as an extra bonus, a complete Eddy Arnold Purina Show from October of 1954.
