  • They Say...

Although Bud Shank has since given up the flute, his playing on the instrument was at its peak in the late 1970s. On this unusual trio set, he sticks to flute while joined by both pianist Bill Mays and Alan Broadbent on electric piano; the keyboardists switch instruments on "How Are Things In Glocca Morra." Despite the odd instrumentation, the music is essentially advanced hard bop, with the talented players exploring six standards including "Scrapple From The Apple," "Body And Soul" and "On Green Dolphin Street." An offbeat success that is a good companion to the classical-oriented Shank-Mays duets of Explorations: 1980 recorded at the same sessions.
