The mysterious and transfixing sound of Tibetan mantras and chants.

  • We Say...

Full confession: the recording quality here leaves a little to be desired — it sounds as if the monks were at the other end of a tunnel when they were singing, though that does add to the alien quality of the pieces. The deep overtones in the voices — similar to Central Asian throat singing — seem to come from somewhere deep in the earth, mysterious and sometimes full of foreboding. The focus of the album is the three lengthy chants, seemingly formless but gradually and casually building in intensity before vanishing back into the void. It's music that pulls slowly on the ear, at times atonal and far from the Western experience. But ultimately it's irresistible, except for the final instrumental cut, which has all the charm of a distant, squealing train. Skip that one, and be transported by the rest to somewhere in inner space.
