They Say...
Genetically Modified is the third full-length from Si Begg (aka Cabbageboy) in under two years, although this might not be immediately apparent since each has been recorded under a different alias. Still, the results here are surprisingly similar to his two 1998 LPs, First Class Ticket to Telos as Buckfunk 3000 and Commuter World as Si Begg. Both of these preceding releases were invisible soundtracks whose subjects never quite came into focus -- not a big loss considering the incredible productions involved. Begg's approach is much the same on Genetically Modified; this time the concept focuses on genetic engineering. An interesting futuristic essay is included in the booklet, though apart from the track titles and occasional samples, there's little to give listeners any clue. Begg's immense production talents make this a non-issue, as tracks like "Departure," "Hey Hey We're the Monks," and "Interstellar Love" show off his schizophrenic fusion of big beat and trance.
