  • They Say...

A very talented trumpet player and leader, Louise Barranger's band swings wildly throughout this very exciting album of mostly standards. Tom Kubis' upbeat arrangements are a gas, setting the stage for one of the most powerful large ensemble recordings in the mainstream genre. Of course, it does not hurt to have the kind of special guest soloists that Baranger was able to attract: trumpeter Arturo Sandoval (Sy Oliver's "Well, Git It!); trombonist Carl Fontana ("I Only Want Some" and "Chitlins"); and vocalists Frank Sinatra, Jr. ("I Only Want Some" and "The Way She Makes Me Feel"); and Gisele Jackson ("I Didn't Know what Time it Was"). The pieces sparkle, with tight harmonies, plenty of swinging solos, and some fine contributions from the leader. This has the verve and exhilarating passion that make you wonder why the big bands ever went out of style.
