They Say...
Marian McPartland and pianist-vocalist Charles Brown obviously hit it off, as heard during this CD release of Brown's appearance on McPartland's radio show Piano Jazz. The highpoint of their generally interesting discussion features Brown talking about (and demonstrating) the difference between 1940's West Coast blues and the blues played in Mississippi. Musically there is not much interplay between the pair with the emphasis placed on solo performances. Brown takes "These Blues," "Is You Is Or Is You Ain't Ma' Baby," his early hit "Drifting Blues," "'Round Midnight," "Sweet Slumber" and "Joyce's Boogie" (the latter in the style of Albert Ammons) while McPartland is heard on "Willow Weep For Me" and her own version of "'Round Midnight." The duo only come together musically on "All My Life," "There Is No Greater Love" and "Seven Long Days." Still, this is a fun set and it is particularly interesting to hear Charles Brown play without his band.
