  • They Say...

Altoist Charlie Mariano first gained recognition as a cool-toned bop player on the West Coast in the 1950s. After moving to Europe during the next decade, he became a much more eclectic player, exploring world music, fusion, and post-bop, even some music bordering on new age. This CD, therefore, is a bit of a surprise, because Mariano for the first time in years returns to playing standards. Backed by a fine trio that also features pianist Bob Degen, Mariano digs into eight vintage tunes plus his Eastern-flavored "Dew Drops" and Degen's "Etosha." The veteran altoist still has a strong tone, and at nearly 78 years old is heard at 90 percent of his peak. Recommended.
