  • They Say...

Gene Norman presented the Charlie Ventura Septet at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium on May 9, 1949 and the results were released on separate (and completely different) albums by Decca and GNP Crescendo. Featured are Ventura on tenor, trumpeter Conte Candoli, trombonist Benny Green, altoist Boots Mussuli, pianist Roy Kral, bassist Kenny O'Brien and drummer Ed Shaughnessy; in addition the voices of Kral and Jackie Cain give the ensembles their own unique sound. Highlights include "Flamingo" (a Jackie and Roy feature that has a Pete Rugolo arrangement), Ventura's showcase on "Body And Soul," "Boptura" and "High On An Open Mike." Both albums from this well-documented concert are excellent with the edge going toward the Decca set.
