Realize It was first released as a private 12" and later reissued on CD by the Milwaukee avant-garde label Crouton. This EP contains two tracks, "Realize It" (ten minutes) and "Gauzebloze" (20 minutes), both long instrumental post-rock pieces blending live improvisation and studio overdubs. The basic tracks were recorded live during one of the trio's three-hour sets at the Hi-Hat Lounge in Milwaukee. Through extensive studio overdubbing, Matt Tennessen, Chris Rosenau, and Jon Mueller added piano, marimba, keyboards, and sound manipulation to create laid-back rock tunes. Comparisons with Tortoise are inevitable, especially on "Realize It," a one-stretch groove. Repetitiveness is eluded through clever arrangements. On "Gauzebloze" the pace slows down, the mood gets more dreamy, and the band forays into more experimental lands -- the piece is less linear too. Rosenau's beautiful acoustic guitar work compensates for the clumsy piano manipulations. The driving force behind it all, Mueller provides creative but straightforward drumming. Realize It makes a nice listen before going to bed and could be seen as one notch above the mass of albums (EPs or otherwise) released in the wake of Tortoise's success.
