  • We Say...

This greatest hits comp traces the career of a great band as well as the evolution of a genre
After the major labels left town in the late '80s, the powerful Rare Essence built up its own independent label and brand and kept the scene moving into the '90s. This album captures all of its influential hits and also traces go-go's evolution from the laid-back funk of the '80s ("Body Moves," "Umm-Umm Good") to the aggressive hip-hop-flavored flavor of the '90s ("Lock It" which got them a short-lived deal with Puff Daddy). 1992's "Work the Walls", with its signature up-tempo pocket (the lock established by the rhythm section), pointed the way toward the next decade-plus of go-go.

  • They Say...

Liason's 1995 greatest-hits release for Rare Essence compiles many of the 12" and album mixes that were anthems on the Washington, D.C., go-go circuit throughout the '80s. Their over-the-top, high-intensity live shows had the reputation of being some of the most energetic performances on the circuit -- featuring extended workouts, audience call and response, and variations on signature tunes. Opening with their most well-known release, "Body Moves," and working through many a crowd favorite, this compilation serves as a wonderful introduction to those not only unfamiliar with Rare Essence, but those wholly uninitiated to the go-go sound.
