Ex-Olivia Tremor Controllers return with their latest psych-pop masterpiece

  • We Say...

This is what breaking down sounds like. In the eight years since these Georgia psych-pop daydreamers made their debut, singer and ex-Olivia Tremor Control frontman Will Cullen Hart was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, and his next album — culled from hours and hours of recording in seven different studios — became a de facto diary of his illness. On Signal Morning, Hart is always searching for something beyond the physical body: sometimes he's imagining a world where "solid forms dissolve into a dream;" other times he's urging himself to "try breathing along with the universe." But if the words are airy, the sound is true grit, lo-fi as a cassette tape melted on your dashboard. With help from Jeff Mangum and members of his former band, Hart knits together texture upon thick, itchy texture — bing-bonging xylophones, drum-stick scribbles, a giant hairball of guitar fuzz — until the whole thing's so loaded up, it starts fraying fast. Like something human, the music falls apart as it grows. What's left is Hart's most challenging — and most affecting — work to date. And it comes with its own little mantra: as Hart sings, "The symphony is there inside you."
