A Victorian wonderland of exquisite stuff

  • We Say...

This Scottish duo spun a gloriously insubstantial sound, devoid of sharp edges or hard center. Head Over Heels resembles a softcore version of A Kiss in the Dreamhouse, Siouxsie & the Banshees' masterpiece of the previous year; both were classic make-out albums of the era for Goths and Gothettes. Siouxsie is also the obvious prototype for Liz Fraser's remarkable voice, although you can hear Kate Bush in her gorgeous gibberish too. While Fraser takes vowel sounds and blows bubbles with them, guitarist Robin Guthrie weaves a cat's cradle of glistening guitar strands over droning, Joy Division-esque bass lines while the drum machine does its duty and the reverb unit is stuck on 11. Head conjures a Victorian wonderland of exquisite stuff — Florentine paper, crystalline gew-gaws, finely-wrought metalwork. With its surrounding EPs Sunburst and Snowblind and The Spangle Make, the Cocteaus' sublime blend of enchanted and eerie hit its peak.
