  • They Say...

Collections of Colonies of Bees is basically Chris Rosenau and Jon Mueller, two-thirds of the post-rock group Pele. But this, CCB's third album, mostly fell into Rosenau's hands. His dreamy acoustic guitars and off-the-wall sound design are everywhere, while Mueller's drums appear only occasionally. The CD presents seven untitled tracks capped by "Mur:der." They all segue, forming a dreamy suite of country-tinged guitar duets (with D. Malhmeister), post-rock vamps, and sound collaging and juxtaposing. Nothing here unfolds like you planned. Delicate shoegazer guitar lines are interrupted by pickup switching from an electric guitar. Ill synthesizers appear like ghostly voices when you least expect them, clicks + cuts (digital or not) pollute the tracks. Sounds unnerving? It is not, and it all goes to Rosenau's credit as a mastermind producer. Granted, some twists and turns are questionable, but in the end the album provides a pleasantly uncomfortable 45-minute sofa ride. It brilliantly illustrates what post-rock can become, what it means beyond the trends. In pure Crouton label fashion, special care has been taken with regard to packaging. The artwork comes from stock photography books and consists of two unique cards. Each cover is thus only one example of 2,000 in circulation.
