Taking a break from his day job as the beatsmith behind the Time Machine, Live and Learn is Mekalek’s solo debut. The sound doesn’t change much, though: Mek’s devotion to the old-school is obvious from the dusty soul loops he samples to the big-name rapper he tapped for the lead single (Bronx fast rap legend Percee P). His Rhode Island roots may seem suspect to some purists, but it’s this early isolation from the mainstream that helps keep his current work distinctive and engaging.
