Guitar-less string quartet shakes up a traditionalist repertoire.
The traditionalism is all in the repertoire with Boston band Crooked Still; most of the songs on Shaken by a Low Sound are public-domain numbers, yet they sound anything but historical in the hands of this unusual quartet that features no guitar. Banjo, fiddle and cello provide the strings in this string band, but it's the soaring voice of Aoife O'Donovan that may grab you most dramatically. Among the standouts are a supersonic-speed melding of Bob Dylan's "Oxford Town" with the standard "Cumberland Gap" and the rare original "Mountain Jumper," which plays up Rushad Eggleston's remarkable cello excursions.
