We Say...
In 1892, Czech patriot Antonin Dvorák reluctantly left his homeland for a well-paid teaching post in New York City. His patron wanted an American school of composition through his model, and it was with great acclaim that his Symphony No. 9 "From the New World" appeared at Carnegie Hall the next year. The famous English horn tune opening the second movement is said to have come from a Negro spiritual, and regardless of its provenance, Dvorák was a strong supporter of the use of black and Amerindian source material as the true music of the new world. In this vintage recording, Hungarian maestro George Szell leads the orchestra first conducted by Dvorák himself.
