They Say...
Think "early-'80s punk," and bands such as Black Flag, the Dead Kennedys, and Hüsker Dü immediately come to mind. But oft-overlooked Canadian punkers D.O.A. are just as deserving of accolades, as they've zipped down more North American freeways than the Road Runner and Wiley Coyote. Since the band has issued a multitude of studio albums since 1980, it's probably best for newcomers to start off with a compilation, and the 22-track Greatest Shits is a solid primer. Featured are such punk classics as "New Wave Sucks" (an update of their earlier rant "Disco Sucks"), "World War 3," and the "fifth or sixth song Joey Shithead ever wrote," "Fucked Up Baby." Also included are a few classic rock covers that get mashed through the D.O.A. blender -- Led Zeppelin's "Communication Breakdown," the Who's "Won't Get Fooled Again," and the Doors' "L.A. Woman." Since the '80s are the sole focus here, fans who want a more thorough D.O.A. career examination may want to check out War and Peace. But for D.O.A. at their most youthful and punk-fueled, few can top Greatest Shits.
