A disarmingly honest, occasionally heartbreaking dispatch from an idealistic rap everyman

  • We Say...

Ever since Common's "I Used to Love H.E.R." popularized the woman-as-hip-hop metaphor, rappers have made a sport of backslapping themselves for being clever enough to romance/save/chide/change hip-hop by method of transference. For Boston's Dagha — formerly of Electric Company and a touring mate of EdanThe Divorce is not figurative; it has nothing to do with any unresolved feelings he might have for the rap game. Rather, it is a fierce and occasionally heartbreaking forty-five minute chronicle of his relationship's sad demise, after too many years juggling work and life, dreams of hip-hop semi-stardom and his duty to his family. "It took 10 years to put an album out with my name," he raps on the ironically cheery-sounding, tears-of-a-clown anthem "My Luck." On "Changed Locks" and "A Man's Question" he re-shuffles his priorities, coming across as a well-meaning but idealistic everyman just trying to get by. What saves The Divorce from being an eternal buzz-kill is Dagha's wit, as he embraces the absurd ("My best friend is white and he says 'Peace, God!'") and the uncomfortable — "People think I'm Insight," he shrugs, referring to one of his frequent collaborators, "my name is always spelled wrong." Not for long, one guesses.
