  • They Say...

Only five singers appear on this sampler (part of a five-CD Denon series also including sets devoted to big bands, piano, saxophones and trumpets) but they are five of the best. Ella Fitgerald and her trio in 1959 perform eight numbers (including "Air Mail Special"), Sarah Vaughan does a song apiece from 1954 and 1960, Carmen McRae is caught during 1972-73, Ruth Brown sings "Fine Brown Frame" with the assistance of the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra and Dakota Staton in 1974 sings two numbers. There is nothing too essential on this set but, if seen at a budget price, it is worth picking up.
