They Say...
Sunburn is the first proper solo release by Daniel Friel, guitarist and electronics guru for the Brooklyn, NY based experimental band Parts & Labor. This seven-song EP was preceded by the 2001 self-released Broken Man Going to Work, with much of this early material serving as sketched for Parts & Labor material. Friel's anti-high-tech mentality is evident from his gear list for the recording -- toy keyboards, walkie talkies, remote control joysticks, five-string guitar, and stompboxes -- all of which melt into a bone-rattling explosion of junkie pre-sets dive bombing into distortion pools. Over the jitter buzz of tracks like "Dead Batteries" and "Tractor Calls" rides naïve, triumphant little melodies not unlike those of more thunderous bands like Lightning Bolt. "B2bs" pushes and warps a pre-set Casio rock beat, banging it into a funky oblivion with meltdowns that serve as anti-funk breaks. "Seven Sisters" and "Death" wallow in their Wall of Sound bluster, sounding like the initial flush of a Pixies song, only the big bad chords never follow through. Still, the songs are mostly structured by convention, so Friel is more pop than noise, though riding the line.
