Macedonia’s Nikolce Vasilevski completed his first tracks in 1992, mimicking the sound of early junglists U96, The Prodigy and 2Unlimited. As time went on, Vasilevski has taken a studious approach to the genre, analyzing the various strands of drum ‘n’ bass as they unfolded before his ears. That’s probably why his debut record under the Dark Machines moniker sounds like a thesis defense, in which Vasilevski masterfully executes fluid jazz breaks (“DnB Science”), straight-ahead bangers (“220”) and even makes room for a matronly vocalist (“Firewater”). While Vasilevski may lose points for trying to cover all the bases at once, he more than makes up for it with his superior drum programming and arrangements. Listen up, class is in session.
