  • We Say...

Brubeck was a pioneer of playing jazz on college campuses, and the Oberlin gig of March, 1953 is a classic. Paul Desmond, his alto saxophonist (who once said he tried to sound like a dry martini), is wondrous. Check out his solo on "Just the Way You Look Tonight" — the crystal-pure tone, the fleet tempo, the insouciant leaps in and out of different genres. Brubeck, too, is worth a careful listen. This was before he took to pounding block chords; he was deeply into Stravinsky and Milhaud, and his cunning counterpoint and harmonies reflect it. The show was recorded in mono, but the warm, spacious acoustics of Oberlin's Finney Chapel shine through.
