A concert recording that catches Brubeck and Paul Desmond in their prime on six standards.

  • We Say...

When most casual jazz fans imagine pianist Dave Brubeck, the sound that frequently comes to mind is the cool, butterscotch-toned alto saxophone of Paul Desmond. The ultimate second banana, Desmond had minimal success leading his own bands, but proved to be the perfect foil for Brubeck, whose polytonality and thorny time signatures would have made him unduly pedantic without the balm of Desmond's sweet horn. This concert recording catches both men in prime form on six standards. Desmond, whose upper register could be mistaken for a clarinet, glides along with the smooth efficiency and deceptive speed of a sailboat on "All the Things You Are" and opens "For All We Know" with the graceful hush of a hymnal. The man who famously wrote the most natural-sounding 5/4 tune in history, "Take Five," makes this album title a double entendre with the scholarly yet utterly peaceful facility of his numerous solos.

  • They Say...

This CD brings back a near-classic (one of many from this period) by the Dave Brubeck Quartet. Drummer Joe Dodge had just joined the group and he joins with bassist Ron Crotty in laying down a solid and subtle foundation. However the real action takes place up front with pianist Dave Brubeck and altoist Paul Desmond. Their individual solos are full of creative ideas on six standards (most memorable are "All The Things You Are," "Laura" and "I'll Never Smile Again") and their interaction and tradeoffs are timeless. Recommended.
