This collection begs comparison with another of the same name released by the Riverside label. That session featured such tracks as Coleman Hawkins playing "Laura" and romantic tunes performed by Mundell Lowe, Kenny Drew, Clark Terry, and other artists in that label's stable. Columbia's compilation certainly has tunes that should appeal to lovers and, if lovingly played, should create the romantic setting needed to cultivate passion. However, that's the rub, i.e., too many of the performances are distractions. Some of the playing is too thoughtful and demands close listening, like Miles Davis' "Wait 'til You See Her." Others are up-tempo numbers, like Paul Desmond on "You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To," unsuitable for moments of passion. There are a few cuts designed to get a couple in the mood, like the Stan Getz/Bob Brookmeyer "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face." Andre Previn's "Don't Blame Me" and Wynton Marsalis' "The Very Thought of You" are unabashedly romantic. But if you are looking for an album to truly help set the stage for a new romantic fling, scour the record bins for the Riverside release. If you are a married couple just wanting to fool around, this Columbia session should meet your needs.
