They Say...
Rounder Records is about as well-equipped as any label at providing a first-rate collection of old-time and bluegrass gospel music, and that's exactly what they've done in this generous, 24-track disc. The stylistic range is about as broad as it possibly can be within the limits of the gospel genre -- from Hazel Dickens' almost medieval mountain inflections on "Here Today, Gone Tomorrow" and "Beautiful Hills of Gallilee," to the countrified (and drum-enhanced) sound of J.D.Crowe and the New South on "Crying Holy." Ricky Skaggs and Tony Rice join forces for the brother-duet classic "Talk About Sufferin'," and the Louvin Brothers (one of the original brother duets) are represented by a 1952 recording of "Sinner You'd Better Get Ready." Banjo wizard Tony Trischka steps to the front of Del McCoury's band to sing his own "Looking for the Light," and Joe Val lends his unearthly tenor voice to a soaring rendition of "I Hear a Voice Calling." There are many other highlights as well on this exceptionally fine collection.
