  • They Say...

The duo of pianist Dick Hyman and trumpeter Randy Sandke, who had played together in a variety of settings during the previous 20 years, is a perfect matchup. Both musicians are virtuosos, very adept at 1920s jazz and open to later styles, with Sandke even delving into the avant-garde at times. On this set they explore standards, classic jazz tunes, and a few swinging originals. Rather than re-create recorded solos on "Weatherbird" and "Wild Man Blues" as they have previously, Hyman and Sandke are more spontaneous this time around, playing in their own colorful styles and constantly challenging each other. Plenty of sparks fly, both of the musicians consistently take chances, and the result is creative music within the idiom of classic jazz. Recommended.
