We Say...
Don Campbell is the author of eighteen books, including the immensely popular Mozart Effect. At the age of thirteen, he studied with the legendary Nadia Boulanger at the American Conservatory in Fontainebleau, France. That experience ultimately set him on a journey to explore the sounds of the world from Haiti to Japan, where he even performed for the emperor. On Essence, Campbell uses deep synths and sub-sonic frequencies to take the listener on a gentle journey into the realm of relaxation. There's a minimalist aesthetic to Campbell's work, which is no doubt influenced by the time he spent in Indonesia studying micro-tonal scales. I was especially moved by the twenty-three-minute opus "Seraphims," which has an Eno-esque feel to it, the slowly pulsing tones moving from lobe to lobe. My one slight criticism is that the level of hiss in these recordings somewhat detracted from my focus. Other than that, this is a fine sampling from one of the world's foremost experts on sound healing.
