  • They Say...

Without getting into what modern swamp pop is or isn't (it seems to be New Orleans R&B crossed with 1950s rock & roll, with a few sprinkles of country and Memphis soul tossed in, plus a heavy dose of horn-driven zydeco), this fourth sampler from CSP falls right in line with the other volumes in the Pure Swamp Pop Gold series, which should come as no big surprise, since it includes most of the same artists. Among the more striking tracks are Kenny Cornett's piece of honky tonk soul, "Nothing Takes the Place of You," Jerry Sartain's punchy "Just a Little Bit," Van Broussard's swamp pop soul take on "Hey Pocky a-Way," and "Is It Wrong," a muscular ballad by Kenny Fife. In the end, listeners will probably be no closer to putting a finger on what swamp pop actually is than when they began, although as the old saying goes, you know it when you hear it.
