  • They Say...

A pairing of tenor saxophonist George Coleman and pianist Tete Montoliu might at first seem odd, but this is a remarkably coherent album in nearly every respect. Coleman and Montoliu are each at the top of their form (coming straight from a European tour), the saxophonist blowing strings of notes like soap bubbles from a pipe and Montoliu singing his Tatum-esque lines. This one should silence anyone doubting Adams' top of the line abilities. His tone is distinct and emotional, the saxophonist being one of the last of a generation of individualists. The unsung duo sings through their instruments, interacts, and creates some wonderfully colorful fare. Four of the six tunes were penned by Coleman or Montoliu and reflect a splendid sophistication. The rendition of Duke Ellington's "Sophisticated Lady" goes right to the heart of the tune, while Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Meditation" is vigorously original. A fine introduction to the work of both Coleman and Montoliu.
