  • They Say...

If it's on the Cleopatra label, it's suspect, but Ridin Dirty in the South: The Ultimate Southern Hip Hop Collection has plenty of big names and worthy tracks. Trouble is, they've messed with the titles and fans of Southern hip-hop run the risk of duplicating bangers they've already purchased. For instance, "Grippin' Grain, Switchin' Lanes" with DSR and Mike Jones is actually "Perfect Team" from Jones' 2004 Swishahouse release, Ballin Underground. There are plenty of other tracks sourced from the Swishahouse family and the emphasis is on Texas, especially the Houston scene. The bonus "Chopped and Screwed" disc is a letdown since the tracks are only slightly slowed down and lightly remixed, plus no track list is provided. Still, you'd have to buy plenty of independently released albums and mixtapes to round up the plentiful highlights, and the budget price of the set is attractive.
