Polite Tennessean store owners, take note — that is not actually Isaac Hayes on the phone.

We Say...
Few prank-call collections can compare to the thrill of doing it yourself, trembling on the end of the line while calling the corner store to ask for Prince Albert in a Can as you try to get your best friend from fourth grade to not giggle so loud as to give the prank away immediately. While not as gut-bustingly funny as the Comedians of Comedy dudes or Todd Barry, this lengthy record consistently delivers.
Jeff Jensen is known to dozens as the bassist for the sorely missed, playful "loverock" trio Smack Dab, creator of intricate puppet shows and director of the amazing Low Down Dirty D.A.W.G.S. movie — a sort of indie blooze-rock Spinal Tap. Andrew Earles, meanwhile, is known to hundreds as a humorist and music critic — an almost entirely unknown combination. A longtime contributor to Tom Scharpling's The Best Show on WFMU, Earles has written for Spin, The Onion, Vice and Chunklet. Many of these recordings were made in the South, and there's a certain amount of playing with certain stereotypes here (thankfully — as that's comedic gold). One wonders if these calls weren't made there just because they live in Tennessee. Where else is one likely to find store owners who lack caller ID in this day and age? Or people polite enough to suffer such a fool for three whole minutes?
There are some memorable bits, particularly those involving a revved-up Morris Day, RuPaul's personal assistant, and an overly sensitive Isaac Hayes. A few too many bits rely on sub-Yacht Rock cultural reference points for their humor — it's funny because it's Christopher Cross, get it? But then again, the track where the caller pretends he's in a "half cover, half originals" band called Unsensible Shooz and harasses a bar manager with his horribly shouted singing is awesome.
