They Say...
Legacy's The Greatest Stars of Folk Music collects 19 samples from the late-'50s/early-'60s folk revival, almost none of which are the versions that listeners are familiar with. For example, instead of the Clancy Brothers doing "The Risin' of the Moon," you get actor/singer Theodore Bikel; Judy Collins, not A.L. Lloyd, gives listeners the seafaring classic "Bonnie Ship the Diamond"; and jovial folk duo Bud & Travis offer up a stirring rendition of "La Bamba" that nevertheless pales before the electrifying Ritchie Valens version. That's not to say that the compilation is second-rate, as it serves as a nice window into a scene that was far more expansive than other classic folk anthologies would lead you to believe, but listeners should know what they're getting into before they open up their wallets.
