They Say...
It's easy to forget, particularly in the early stages of the 21st century when world pop music seems predominately driven by rhythm over melody, that things weren't always like that. This set features 16 romantic classics from the 1930s that are framed and defined by melody, and it's oddly refreshing to hear artists like Fred Astaire ("Things Are Looking Up," "The Way You Look Tonight"), Noël Coward ("Just Let Me Look at You"), and the wry, mannered Marlene Dietrich ("Falling in Love Again") take their time working out every nook and corner of sturdy melody lines with all the precision and patience of a horn player. These sides sound quaint, sure, but they take their time setting and creating a mood, and then those melodies tumble out, attached to appropriately considered lyrics. It's all pretty revealing.
